An alternative is to use TweakUI; it has a template tweaking section.

version for Windows XP and above

version for Windows 9x/Me/2000

Why go to so much trouble? Write your own template, if on 2000/XP, drop it into C:\Documents and Settings\YOURACCOUNT\Templates. Otherwise, keep it backed up to a safe place and drop it into the SHELLNEW folder as mentioned above. The AutoIt installer will overwrite the one in ShellNew (Or at least it used to, Jon could of changed that) so it's best to try to use a different spot if possible.
