Why is AutoIt not open source? Are there plans to make this a commercial product one day?

I am researching more affordable tools that could be used to perform automated software testing (similar to Mercury QTP or Rational Functional Tester). AutoIt is one of the tools recommended. I realize that AutoIt was not designed for this purpose but my brief testing of AutoIt makes me believe it might be able to do this.

Here is the problem:

If we use the Mercury or Rational products for automated testing, then we would have a contract with Mercury or Rational. This contract means they have a general obligation to ensure that their product meets certain requirements for our company.

On the other hand, if we use an open source product, if there are problems with the program then at least we have access to the full source code and could have one of the developers working for our company research the problem.

AutoIt is somewhere in-between. AutoIt does not have any obligation to ensure the products works and since my company would not have access to the full source code then we could not fix any issues.

Maybe this is the way you like it. Making AutoIt into a commercial product is a huge leap. But, if there are no plans to ever make it commercial, then why not make it open source?

AutoIt was open source, it is not open source any longer. I don't have the thread(s) off-hand where this was discussed. In any case, the subject isn't open for discussion.
