I'm not sure if that part of your post was talking about a virtual machine or not... but it is just a program running like any other program. It does not require a partition on the hard drive or a special boot. Just think of it like a really large Notepad program. You can run more than one VM at a time providing you have the RAM, hard drive space, and that many valid OS licenses.

As long as you don't install a bunch of junk and turn off some services, XP Pro SP3 takes about 3GB of hard drive space and can run with about 64MB of RAM assigned to it. Of course, the more RAM you can afford to give each VM, the faster the virtual OS will respond.

I use both MS and VirtualBox. Each has features the other does not. I would start with the MS version for simplicity.
