From the Help file for InputBox:

Return Value - Success: Returns the string that was entered

So check for the string value:

Do
    $a = InputBox("", "")
until $a = "0"

AutoIt's non-typed variables are generally very helpful, but at times they can bite, particularly if you mix types!

Untill $a = ''

would be what the OP intended.

Use double equals sign:

Do
    $a = InputBox("", "")
until $a == 0

Look up "Operators" in the help for an explanation.

"==" is supposed to be "case sensitive". Somehow it affects this expression.

"==" forces string comparison, so you are doing the same thing Melba23 does, except you are wasting cpu-cycles (the conversion) just so you can write ugly code. It would be better to compare with a string directly:

Until $a = "0"
