FileReadLine reads an integer; but variable doesn't behave as integer

I've searched the forum and the help files for this problem, and no success. Perhaps I'm missing something?

$something1 = FileReadLine($file)
$something2 = FileReadLine($file)

Let's assume that the two lines read are 750 and 1000. I assumed this would have the same effect as setting the variables this way

$something1 = 750
$something2 = 1000

But no!

If $something1 > $something2 Then
   MsgBox(1, "", "750 is bigger than 1000!")
ElseIf $something2 > $something1 Then
   MsgBox(1, "", "1000 is bigger than 750!")
EndIf

Using literal variable assignments gives the correct message box, but using FileReadLine produces the wrong one. AutoIT seems to be treating the values 750 and 1000 as strings, not integers.

What is going on?

No, FileReadLine() returns a string. If you want to simulate, it would be:

; $something1 = 750
; $something2 = 1000
$something1 = "750"
$something2 = "1000"

;)

annelinn ,

AutoIT seems to be treating the values 750 and 1000 as strings, not integers

From the Help file:

FileReadLine - Read in a line of text from a previously opened text file. Return Value - Success: Returns a line of text

So you are getting exactly what you should - a string.

$something1 = FileReadLine($file) is the equivalent of $something1 = "750"; whereas $something1 = 750 sets the variable to the integer value 750.

Remember that Autoit uses untyped variables. It is up to you to remember what the content is and use functions like Num, Binary, String, etc to get the content into the form you need. ;)
