zip and compression

Recommended Posts

#001/001

I have a large file I produce 250GB).

I need to add something to my script that will allow me to compress it on the fly and password protect it, if possible.

My biggest concern is that the file is written to a 250GB hdd and most of my efforts require that I produce the compressed file separate of the original work file thus creating 500GB of used space.

Does anyone know how I can compress, zip, whatever the file on the fly - maybe writing the file right to the archive - and getting around this huge duplication in both time and space

I don't know how I randomly fell into this thread... but perhaps you should consider using a compressed folder on your drive to store the file (right-click -> Properties -> Advanced -> Compress...). That way windows handles all the compression on the fly without any temporary files. You drive must be formatted NTFS I think.
