Return value to command line.

Hi all,

I am making a script and what I need to do is return a value to command prompt.

What happens, it the user inputs switches, and if none of the switches are valid, it returns help/information on switches that can be used.

I thought this could be achieved by using the return function, however it appears that it is not that simple.

The syntax of my command is:

[autoit]

Global $sHelp = "Command line switches help." & @CRLF & "by Shane Thompson."

If (not any valid switches) Then

Return($sHelp)

EndIf

[autoit]

The $sHelp variable will grow in size as I get to put more help info in however the problem is with the return function.

The return function returns the following error:

Line 9
Return("TEST2")
^ ERROR
Error: Invalid keyword at the start of this line.

To the best of my knowledge, I have used it before without a worry, however now I can not. I looked in the help file for return however nothing was given to me. So now it has me wondering if the return function is available?

Have a look to $CmdLine and ConsoleWrite in the help file.

And compile with option 'Create CUI instead of GUI.EXE'

Is there any way to get it to work like that while it is still an au3 file?

I do have the $cmdline working fine, that is just the contents of the if statement that I gave. I am wondering about the displaying text?

I did look at consolewrite, however it stated it does not write to command prompt/console windows?

EDIT: Just read it again, and it says This does not write to a DOS console unless the script is compiled as a console application.. Got it now

That's not entirely true, there are many ways to get a console in a GUI application.

I've done quite a lot of work on this, making a project page for it here. All the functions are fully documented, and it's a pretty complete set, all it needs is examples and more thorough testing and then I'll release it as a proper library. Until then I'm letting people use it as long as they post any changes or examples they may find on the project page.

The basic functions you need all have examples: _Console_Alloc, _Console_Write and others you may find useful like _Console_SetTitle, _Console_SetIcon and _Console_Read.

Not tested that but it should work fine. I'm working on a FAQ page now, as there is a few things that are slightly... odd.

Wow, Mat! Pretty cool UDF you have there. I realised after the first attempt you have to compile, but that is pretty cool for debugging purposes!

Wrong again. You just can't run from SciTE that's why I need a FAQ as there are some very annoying niggles, like ConsoleWrite not working. I intend to expand it, but here's what I have so far: FAQ.

I'm not bothered if I have to compile everytime! In the long run it could save alot of time finding problems.

You can use the Exit function with an integer as a return value!

Compile the script and start it from a batch file which may look like this where as test.exe is the compiled Autoit script:

@test.exe
@echo %errorlevel%

The AutoIt code:

MsgBox(0, "Test", "Errorlevel return code is 8", 10)
Exit (8)

Compiling all the time is a pain, AutoIt was clearly never made for compiling regularly There will still be plenty of functions in there that you'll find useful, even if you do compile as CUI.

Hello guys, sorry to revive this topic but not the best place. 

I went through this same problem and found an alternative to replace the "Return" which is the Function Call.

I tried the below line.

 

Exit(1)

I kept only this line in the au3 file.
And compiled it as a CUI.

 

But still the %ERRORLEVEL% is not able to use this exit code from windows command line, I tried on both windows 10 and server 2012 R2.

May be this is the wrong approach, can you suggest how to read the error code returned from autoit script on windows command prompt/batch file.

I got the issue, When I compile the exe from my laptop, It's being blocked by windows defender.

So I copied the au3 file to a different machine where only autoit is installed, not scite full version.

I though Scite is not required as the macro setting line is there in the au3 file.

It is not picking this if only autoit is installed and compiling as GUI.

I installed scite on that machine now and it is returning 1.
