Hey there,

I searched the forum a little to make sure i wasent about to post this twice.

I am slightly inexperienced with AutoIt but there was something i wanted to know.

Is it possable to open a file with a compiled or normal AU3 script and have it perform a function.

To be more clear, say i had a basic GUI with an edit box inside, if i asked a TXT file to open with my script it would open and read the file then input it's content into the edit box, roughly the same way it would open in notepad. This is just one of the examples of what i mean.

I have tried to do this my self but the closest i can get is to create a FileOpenDialog then run the script and select the file and go from there.

I hope i've made this clear enough :x

Thanks!

Darkglow,

Welcome to the AutoIt forum. :x

What you want to do is very easy to achieve. Just use FileRead to get the contents of the file into a variable and then load it into the Edit control with GUICtrlSetData.

Have you taken a look at the excellent tutorials you can find here and here? They will give you a good grounding in how AutoIt works. :P

I don't think this is the same as what I thought however I do appreciate the help, thanks!

I've posted some screen shots below to show what I mean.

Open With> Choose default program...

Browse

Open With> The script.AU3

The final result

I hope this is clear... and I also hope I'm not getting myself confused either!

Thanks again

Darkglow,

A glimmer at the end of the tunnel! :P

I believe that what happens when you use "Open With" is that the selected file is passed as a parameter to the chosen application. You therefore need to create your script to look for command line parameters - see <Using AutoIt - Command Line Parameters> in the Help file. :x

I've been doing some experimenting but sadly i've hit another hard bit

I've been using the parameters that you advised me Melba23, after compiling and opening with the txt file it the variable contains the path of the file i selected to open so I thought It would read the file but it doesn't want to.

#include <GUIConstantsEx.au3>
#include <WindowsConstants.au3>
Opt('MustDeclareVars', 1)
Edit()

Func Edit()
Local $msg
GUICreate("EDIT")
GUICtrlCreateEdit(FileRead($CmdLineRaw) , 20, 20, 260, 260)
 GUISetState(@SW_SHOW)
While 1
$msg = GUIGetMsg()
If $msg = $GUI_EVENT_CLOSE Then ExitLoop
WEnd
GUIDelete()
EndFunc

I suppose you can see my silly mistake? :x

Darkglow,

I suppose you can see my silly mistake?

I believe I can! :nuke:

Try putting in this line at the top of your script and see what $CmdLineRaw is set to - you might be surprised. :shifty:

ConsoleWrite($CmdLineRaw & @CRLF)

What you need to do is use the [1] element of the $CmdLine array like this:

Func Edit()
    Local $msg
    GUICreate("EDIT")
    GUICtrlCreateEdit(FileRead($CmdLine[1]), 20, 20, 260, 260)
    GUISetState(@SW_SHOW)
    While 1
        $msg = GUIGetMsg()
        If $msg = $GUI_EVENT_CLOSE Then ExitLoop
    WEnd
    GUIDelete()
EndFunc   ;==>Edit

Then I can get it to work without problem. :x

By the way, you do realise that you can test for commandline parameters in SciTE rather than having to compile each time? Look under the <View - Parameters> menu option - you can set up to 4 parameters. You may need the full SciTE4AutoIt3 package - which you can find here - lots of goodies to help you code in Autoit. :P
