I was just checking out guinness's Google Weather UDF (neat use of transparency, BTW). This UDF determines location using an IP address lookup. This begs the following question, how does a site like www.whatsmyipaddress.com get the REAL ip address when I all I get is the 192.168.x.x (behind router)?

It's done by the use of PHP >> http://roshanbh.com.np/2007/12/getting-real-ip-address-in-php.html The @IPAddress is only able to get your Local IP Address, because even with some fancy ipconfig 'stuff,' Windows only knows your Internal IP Address too! It's similar to how do you know you house number without looking outside-in first?! :x

The link you gave drives me to "Roshans Blog" with a "404 page not found". If I understand your analogy correctly then "whatsmyipaddress" can find the "real" ipaddress because it is seeing my network connection from outboard of my router, whereas, I am seeing the network from pc to router, but not beyond. Is this correct? (networking seems like all voodoo to me).

Correct, plus some websites can show you your Internal IP address e.g. 192.168.0.2 by using Java and communicating that way.

thanks, this is not a subject for this forum so I'll close with these conclusions...

- 1 hard-wired and 3 wireless pc's behind my router all show same ip address, therefore router is handling destination translation at some point (perhaps final destination look like rrrr.rrrr.rrrr.rrrr:llll.llll.llll.llll where "r" is router address and "l" is local address (local to router - not sure of correct terminology))

- the "real" question should have been "what is my routers ip address"

- the ip address from these web sites is gleaned from asp header, php variable, etc (no real magic here)
