alternatives to upx dont seem to work so well

i can compile with upx, but then people using my software complain about antivirus. so i compile without upx and its a huge size, though not detected anymore.

i tried various alternative exe compressors but they either cost money, or dont work. is there a free exe compressor that works with autoit other than upx?

There are others e.g. MPRESS (but you can't distribute your application if compressed with MPRESS, only for personal use.) I would just inform the Antivirus companies that your software isn't malicious. Also I don't understand why having a program that is 750KB is considered big these days when we now have drives in the Tera-bytes. :)

I think what you are referring to is redistribution of the MPRESS program, not programs that were compressed with it. That's how the license reads to me anyway.

I knew about the redistribution, but I found out about the from somewhere else. I think it was only GPL'd applications and MPRESS if I remember rightly!

Hi all,

As guinness stated, the size of an uncompressed AutoIt program is nothing compared to the size of hard disk drives we're using these days.

Also, a compressed program doesn't use less memory when executed. The only gain you have, is used space on the drive.

Of course, when distributing programs the size does mather. But I would suggest using an installer like NSIS which compresses your (uncompressed) AutoIt program and adds only about 35 kBytes of overhead.

If size is an issue because of frequent updates you could use an exe that updates and runs a a3x file. the exe would only have to be downloaded once and the a3x files are very small in size, especially when you use obfuscator with the /so flag.

It doesn't say in the MPRESS License but I do remember reading somewhere that if the License of 'your' application is GPL'd then 'you' can't redistribute the application that is compressed with MPRESS. I think the owner of PortableApps might have said about it.
