Read/Modify Excel Files without Microsoft Excel installed

Recommended Posts

I have to work on a locked workstation, i can't install OpenOffice.

Alternatives ?

1) Yea, the light reading I mentioned.

2) Or maybe Google Docs?

3) Google "Openoffice portable" and see if you can get info on getting OpenOffice without the need for an installer (run on a USB stick, for instance)

Sorry that's all I got! Good luck

PortableApps has versions of OpenOffice and other "Office" type programs that can be installed on a thumb drive that doesn't require anything saved to the computer.

If I posted any code, assume that code was written using the latest release version unless stated otherwise. Also, if it doesn't work on XP I can't help with that because I don't have access to XP, and I'm not going to.

By the way, I just tried to get to the OpenOffice.org website, it appears that it is no longer available. Oracle it seems has pulled OpenOffice.org and is now selling it as OracleOpenOffice for a fee instead. Unless I'm reading the website wrong.

Hmm... This page says:

We move to a new infrastructure starting Monday Feb 21. The site is in read-only mode for 4-5 days. more...

I don't see any reference to "OracleOpenOffice" for a fee anywhere. Where did you get that?

Anyway, the non-Oracle encumbered community that used to be at OpenOffice.org is now LibreOffice.

:)

This is what I get when I try to access the http://www.openoffice.org/news/ URL.

ERROR

While trying to retrieve the URL: http://www.openoffice.org/news/

The following error was encountered:

Tried it on 2 different networks that I can connect to and get the same results.

If I go to this link, http://www.oracle.com/us/products/applications/open-office/index.html I see a big BUY NOW button for Oracle Office.

Add the jump tag "/#move" to your URL and it should work.

Oracle Office is not the same thing as OppenOffice.org. Sun made OpenOffice as a fork of StarOffice. StarOffice continued to have proprietary parts, while OpenOffice was completely Open Source. In a move Oracle probably intended to confuse the issue after buying Sun, Oracle's "Oracle Open Office" is a decendent of the StarOffice proprietary branch, not the OpenOffice Open Source branch.

Avoid the foolishness and just go with LibreOffice. That's where all the decent developers from the Open Source branch of OpenOffice went anyway.
