Arrays

Recommended Posts

Please help to identify the column position in a 2D array.

Example:

I have a 2D array as below.

$ar1[0][0]="Name"

$ar1[0][1]="Age"

$ar1[0][2]="state"

$ar1[0][3]="country"

$ar1[1][0]="John"

$sr="state"

I want to know the column position where "state" exist (in the first row of this 2D array)?

ie... I am expecting answer of "2" (second column).

I am trying with _ArraySearch as below, but still no luck.

$dbm1 = _ArraySearch($ar1, $sr)

MsgBox(1,"s",$dbm1) --> This returns the row position ie... 0 but I need column position in this first row.

regards,

Krishna

_ArraySearch will let you search by column, but you'd have to know which column to search in, otherwise you'd have to search each column one at a time. You could use _ArraySearch to find which row your item is in, then loop through the elements of that row to find the column number.

If I posted any code, assume that code was written using the latest release version unless stated otherwise. Also, if it doesn't work on XP I can't help with that because I don't have access to XP, and I'm not going to.

krishpun,

Or search each column in turn like this: :)

#include <Array.au3>

Global $ar1[2][4]

$ar1[0][0] = "Name"
$ar1[0][1] = "Age"
$ar1[0][2] = "state"
$ar1[0][3] = "country"
$ar1[1][0] = "John"

$sr = "state"

; For each column
For $i = 1 To UBound($ar1, 1)
    ; Search for the value
    $dbm1 = _ArraySearch($ar1, $sr, 0, 0, 0, 0, 1, $i)
    ; If found
    If $dbm1 <> -1 Then
        ; Display column number
        MsgBox(1, "s", $i)
    EndIf
Next

Thanks, but it works only for "state". It does not work for other values say, "country"

Please let me know what change should I make?

#include <Array.au3>

Global $ar1[2][4]

$ar1[0][0] = "Name"

$ar1[0][1] = "Age"

$ar1[0][2] = "state"

$ar1[0][3] = "country"

$ar1[1][0] = "John"

$sr = "country"

; For each column

For $i = 1 To UBound($ar1, 1)

; Search for the value

$dbm1 = _ArraySearch($ar1, $sr, 0, 0, 0, 0, 1, $i)

; If found

If $dbm1 <> -1 Then

; Display column number

MsgBox(1, "s", $i)

EndIf

Next

krishpun,

My apologies - I used the wrong value for the dimension parameter in UBound which, by chance, worked for the "state" case. :)

Please change the line to read:

For $i = 0 To UBound($ar1, 2) - 1

and all should be well. :)

I was taking a look before I see Melba23's reply but... here another "dirty" way :)

Global $ar1[2][4]

$ar1[0][0] = "Name"
$ar1[0][1] = "Age"
$ar1[0][2] = "state"
$ar1[0][3] = "country"
$ar1[1][0] = "John"
$sr = "country"
For $i = 0 To UBound($ar1,1)-1
    For $f = 0 To UBound($ar1,2)-1
        $dbm1=StringInStr($ar1[$i][$f],$sr)
        If $dbm1 <> 0 Then
        ; Display column number
        MsgBox(1, "s", $f)
        EndIf
    Next
Next
