Run compiled script at startup/before logon

My autoIt script connects and authenticates a vpn client. I'd like it to run on startup, but not when a user logs into the machine. I have tried adding a regwrite in the script for it to run at start. This works, but it also runs when a user logs in. There is the same effect when putting the executable in the startup folder. I've tried creating a service for it with sc.exe. It runs into a timeout error when trying to start and crashes the OS.

Any ideas?

Edit: the registry entry and startup folder don't have a vpn before logon setup. Must of mistaken that for something else before.
