Question about declaring variables

Recommended Posts

I hope this isn't an obvious question. I tend to ask those a lot.

If case 0 is never reached then why does AU3Check claim that $variable was already declared/assigned?

#AutoIt3Wrapper_AU3Check_Parameters=-w 3

Global Const $decision = 1

Switch $decision
    Case 0
        Global $variable = False
    Case 1
        Global $variable = True
EndSwitch

ConsoleWrite($variable & @LF)

Because AU3Check doesn't check if the declaration is a conditional one. It sees a Global in front of $variable, says it's declared.

It's because you only need to declare it once whereas you are declaring $variable twice, it's best practice to declare Global Variables at the start of the Script. This is how I would do it >>

#AutoIt3Wrapper_Au3Check_Parameters=-d -w 1 -w 2 -w 3 -w 4 -w 5 -w 6

Global Const $iDecision = 1
Global $bVariable

Switch $iDecision
    Case 0
        $bVariable = False
    Case 1
        $bVariable = True
EndSwitch

ConsoleWrite($iDecision & @LF)

I use Global when I have to use the variable throughout the Script, but mostly use only Local's in Functions & ReDim (if really necessary!)

It doesn't work like that. I'm not an AutoIt Dev so I can't say how AutoIt does it, but I speculate AutoIt sees $iVariable declared somewhere in the Script and leaves it at that ... but I how I do it is when declaring variables Local/Global I always do so at the start of the Script/Function as this causes less problems with debugging.

Gotcha, I understand the best practice aspect. I just wanted to dig my teeth into some technical meat. I actually strive to eliminate global vars as much as possible with exceptions made for const. That's why I use AutoItObject the way that I do even though I'm sure that isn't the intended use. And yes I know that it isn't true object orientation and no I'm not using AIO to learn OOP. I use C++ for that.

That, by the way, is correct. But, your original question was why did AU3Check say it was already declared, correct?

The reason AU3Check says it's already declared is because it checks your script from line 1 to the last line top to bottom. It sees that you've declared $variable Global, then it sees you doing it again 2 lines later so its logic says you declared it twice.

The script won't bomb out because it was declared that way, it's just not the way to declare variables safely.

Ahh, thank you for your response.

But just because AU3Check throws a warning doesn't necessarily mean that it's unsafe?

Yes, AU3Check is being literal in what it sees as being declared or not. Just make sure you're not doing it in a function, global declarations in a function are even more prone to throwing warnings.
