Palindrome Program

Recommended Posts

Hello Everyone,

I have made a program that accepts a string and checks if it is palindrome or not.

However, I am curious if it is made shorter and easier...

Here it is...

$string=StringLower(stringstripws(inputbox ("Palindrome Check :","Enter the string" & @CR & "Any spaces in the string will be cut off"),8))
$checkvar=1
if isint(stringlen($string)/2)=0 Then
    for $i=1 to (stringlen($string)/2)-0.5
        $1char=""
        $2char=""
        $1char=stringmid($string,$i,1)
        $2char=stringmid($string,stringlen($string)-$i+1,1)
        if number(asc($1char))<>number(asc($2char)) Then
            $checkvar=0
            ExitLoop
        EndIf
    Next
Elseif isint(stringlen($string)/2)=1 Then
    for $i=1 to stringlen($string)/2
        $1char=stringmid($string,$i,1)
        $2char=stringmid($string,stringlen($string)-$i+1,1)
        if  number(asc($1char))<>number(asc($2char)) Then
            $checkvar=0
            ExitLoop
        EndIf
    Next
EndIf
if $checkvar=0 Then
msgbox (64,"Palindrome Check","String is NOT palindrome")
ElseIf $checkvar=1 Then
    msgbox (64,"Pakindrome Check","String is palindrome")
EndIf

Shaarad,

My attempt: :huh2:

#Include <String.au3>

$sString = StringLower(StringStripWS(InputBox("Palindrome Check :", "Enter the string" & @CR & "Any spaces in the string will be ignored"), 8))

$sMsg = "String is NOT palindrome"
If $sString == _StringReverse($sString) Then
    $sMsg = "String is palindrome"
EndIf

MsgBox(64, "Palindrome Check", $sMsg)

As a sidenote, you can test palindromic character of strings using a regexp, which is an interesting exercise. I strongly suggest you try by yourself before looking at the spoiler.

Local $pal = "AbcDCBa"

ConsoleWrite(">" & $pal & "< is a palindromic string: " & (StringRegExp($pal, "(?i)^(?:huh2:(.)(?1)\2|)|((.)(?3)\4|.))$") = 1) & @LF)

Note that this possibility now offers you a whole new gameplay, for instance ignoring not only case but non-letters, like in:

Local $hardpal = "A man, a plan, a canal: Panama!"

ConsoleWrite(">" & $hardpal & "< is a significant-english-letter-wise palindromic string: " & (StringRegExp($hardpal, "(?i)^\W*+(?;)(.)\W*+(?1)\W*+\2|)|((.)\W*+(?3)\W*+\4|\W*+.\W*+))\W*+$") = 1) & @LF)

Obtaining the same result with the latter string but without regexp is a real challenge!
