Hello. Im trying to configure my system so that a bunch of different extensions (for example, ".psd") get associated certain application FOR ALL USERS. Ive been playing around with the register but I don't see a way to do it. Could someone please help me, please?

If you run the Example it will give you a visual idea. What the Function does is create a custom association e.g. .myFileType with your program or a program of your choice.

Im running this:

$b = _ShellFile_Install("Open with notepad", "psd", "XnView", "C:\WINNT\NOTEPAD.EXE", "C:\Programme\AutoIt3\Icons\au3.ico", 0, 1)
MsgBox(64, "Title", $b)

But it returns 0.... why is that??

There are 2 commands that work together in Windows that will associate a file extension with a program that will Open it. Take a look at the Assoc and Ftype commands in the Windows console and you can use them together to create a filetype that will be associated with a program to open it. As far as I know, the Assoc command only affects the Open verb for the file types you select.

If I posted any code, assume that code was written using the latest release version unless stated otherwise. Also, if it doesn't work on XP I can't help with that because I don't have access to XP, and I'm not going to.

It doesnt work. i did:

ASSOC .psd=XnView
FTYPE XnView=C:\Programme\XnView\xnview.exe

and it didnt work :\

Try reversing the Ftype command and the Assoc commands, it might be that you need the file type to be defined before you associate to it. I'm guessing that if there is no filetype XnView, the Assoc command has nothing to bind .psd to.

EDIT: Also, try each command one at a time and check the results before using the next one. Make sure that the Ftype command actually creates the filetype when it's run, then if that worked, use the Assoc command to associate the extension to the filetype and see if that worked. Just as a way of making sure that you're using the commands correctly, and that they're doing what you want as a way to debug what you're trying to do.

Try this, works for me..

To check that file extension "xyz" is associated with the application "NotePad",
under xp op system:-
- Open windows explorer;
- Under the "Tools" menu click "Folder Options";
- Click "File Types" tab;
- Scroll down to "XYZ" extension and highlight;
- Note below, the "Details for" and "Opens with";
- Or, press "Delete" button to delete the file extension.
