Backing registry up

Just a small question, im trying to simply back the registry up before i make a load of changes through a script

I started with these examples from search

ShellExecuteWait("regedit.exe /e backup.reg")
RunWait ( 'regedit /e ' & @ScriptDir & '\Save.reg' )
RunWait("REG EXPORT HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT backup.reg")

and i cant get them to work so i wondered if it was not calling cmd properly so i added comspec

RunWait (@ComSpec & " /c" & 'regedit /e ' & @ScriptDir & '\Save.reg' )

But it just flashes and doesnt make a backup, is the syntax incorrect?

Or have i missed something obvious?

Close you were just missing a space between /c & regedit >>

odd just tried that and still no file and the cmd window still flashes as normal

this is latest

RunWait(@ComSpec & ' /c ' & 'regedit /e ' & @ScriptDir & '\registry_backup.reg')

its not hidden cos ive checked?

Hmm just tried 64bit redirection and that didnt work

I ran the command Regedit /e <filename> from the command line in the console, and it doesn't wait until it's finished before I'm back at the command line prompt again. It's running the command, because the file was created with the registry information, but there was no outward sign that it was running other than my HDD light going nuts for a minute or so. This is on Windows 7 x86.

If I posted any code, assume that code was written using the latest release version unless stated otherwise. Also, if it doesn't work on XP I can't help with that because I don't have access to XP, and I'm not going to.

I believe its spaces in the files causing it

guiness and UEZ neither worked as it hung because of a space

that works fine m8 though it does take a while

thanks for the help all ill have a play around again as i dont prob need all backing up so might trim it back to just the areas im changing

Time depends on the number of registry entries and it takes a while even if you open a CMD window and type the command in manually.

is working. I wanted to point out the switch /k which doesn't close the cmd window when finished to make a better troubleshooting. :graduated:

One small question to finish

I notice with these

" '     " '
they are in sequence.

when i was testing i did try

' "        " '
but it didnt work

How does the sequence make the difference?

' is the main quotation mark and " is within which is including the path!

Heres a quirky one..

Are parts of the registry blocked from backup?

This works

RunWait(@ComSpec & ' /c ' & 'regedit /e "' & @ScriptDir & '\Backup\HKLMMS_backup.reg" HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft',"", @SW_HIDE)

This doesn't

RunWait(@ComSpec & ' /c ' & 'regedit /e "' & @ScriptDir & '\Backup\HKLMMS_backup.reg" HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools',"", @SW_HIDE)

Its just the next level down and nothing below it will work either.

I tried with admin and tried 64 redirection etc but no avail

Can anyone advise why the key is blocked?

The key is not blocked it just have a space in the name and need "quotes" around:

RunWait(@ComSpec & ' /c ' & 'regedit /e "' & @ScriptDir & '\Backup\HKLMMS_backup.reg" "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools"',"", @SW_HIDE)

BTW: no need for @comspec here at all, better use ShellExecute instead:

ShellExecuteWait('regedit', '/e "' & @ScriptDir & '\Backup\HKLMMS_backup.reg" "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools"')
