Impossible to say why it happened given that you have offered zero useful info. Recovery is simple. Just restore from the last backup that you took (of course, you back your files up?)

SciTE doesn't create backups Tidy.exe does. This is found in the package SciTE4AutoIt3 by jos. Also the files are located in a folder called Backup and labelled (FileName)_old(incremental number).au3, I don't know where you got .bak files from.

SciTE has an automatic back up feature, it will create x amount of back ups every time you save a new version of your file. In the au3.properties file there is a setting that you can change to have SciTE create the back ups for you so that this doesn't happen to you again.

#define the number of backup files you want to keep 0=none

backup.files=0

If I posted any code, assume that code was written using the latest release version unless stated otherwise. Also, if it doesn't work on XP I can't help with that because I don't have access to XP, and I'm not going to.
