command line with variable?

Hello everyone, I am very new to scripting to forgive me for my lack of knowledge.

Here is what I am trying to do:

I am needing to make a script that can browse for a file, select the file and run a cmd line process on that file. So I would need the program to open, select the desired file, and then run the following within cmd on the selected file

mp4box.exe -hint "filename"

I have played around a bit with the program but cannot understand how to run a command line function like so. The other question is that this exe file that is running has 4 or 5 additional files that it uses. It is possible to package them all up into 1 exe file? Any help? Thanks!

Look in the Help file & Forum for $CmdLine/$CmdLineRaw, from there you will get an insight into using commandline arguments in your application OR if you're using an external program look at the Run command.

Edit: The answer to your second question is FileInstall().

Take a look at the Run command for how to run your external program from the script, use FileOpenDialog if you need the user to select a file rather than having it hard coded in the script.

To package up all of the external files in a compiled exe use FileInstall. See the help file for the correct way to use all of these and you should be well on your way.

I have a hard time understanding fundementals of how this al works and I am VERY slow to all of this so thankyou for your patience but here is where i am at.

Also, it is the $var that represents the chosen filename? What is the variable that represents the file that was chosen?

The second to last line should go like this- $cmdline = "mp4box.exe -hint " & $var

Try this - $cmdline = "mp4box.exe -hint " & Eval($var)

$cmdline can't be used that way, it's the array that tells the script what command line parameters were passed to it. You need to use the Run command in place of $cmdline.

opps sorry, should have been this. But with this i get a command window that pops up not long enough for me to see anything.

Last time, read the help file on how to use the Run command, you're using it wrong. Plus, you don't need to use Eval for $var, that doesn't make any sense. Also, your $var is going to contain several lines of file names separated by @CRLF, that will not work as a variable to pass to your program.

I would suggest starting from scratch and go through the tutorials on how to use AutoIt. You're attempting something that is beyond your skill set and you're going to get frustrated very quickly if you don't learn the basics first.

$CmdLine is a Global Constant so it can't be changed (thankfully.)

I am probably never going to use any of this scripting ever again. Possibly there is someone who could write this for me that I could pay a small amount. PM if you are interested.

I only need this for a specific task. I am no programmer and do not have the intelligence to become one. So i need someone smarter than myself:)

I think you are trying to do something like:

mp4box.exe -hint filename1
mp4box.exe -hint filename2
mp4box.exe -hint filename3

In this case, you should use a loop to execute the command multiple times, something like:
