See if any text is selected?

If the selected text is part of a web page some browsers will copy to clipboard as text if you send ^c. Some may not. A text edit control like the one I'm using now is a different story. I mean read-only selected text. Some browsers or PDF viewers may not even copy to clipboard as text. Copy to clipboard is likely to work with more windows than any other method. The best approach depends on what you are trying to do and the nature of the particular window.

Yeah, that's my plan B. Is there a way to avoid overwriting what clipboard already has stored? Like writing it to a variable, then putting the contents of the variable back into clipboard? Are there limitations to the kind of data AutoIt can put into clipboard?

Quinch,

Exactly - use ClipGet to put the Clipboard contents into a temporary variable and then ClipPut to replace it once you have finished with the Clipboard.

Yes - you may have to look at the _ClipBoard_* functions if you want to store certain things. I have not delved into this UDF much, but there are a number of topics on it if you search. :)
