Best way to go about determining style/flags

Recommended Posts

This is a generic question. Multiple functions, such as _GuiCtrlComboBox_Create include several options, that may be added together to include multiple styles (such as the $iStyle for the above function).

When they are all added as one sum, what is the best way to break it back down into it's parts?

Such as, if 63, then you know that the following are set 1 + 2 + 4 + 8 + 16 + 32.

The best way I can think up, is to create an array of all the posibilities, and loop through until the correct record is found. Is there a better way?

IEbyXPATH-Grab IE DOM objects by XPATH IEscriptRecord-Makings of an IE script recorder ExcelFromXML-Create Excel docs without excel installed GetAllWindowControls-Output all control data on a given window.

The integer is interpreted as a binary string and it is checked if a bit is switched on or off.

63 (decimal) is 111111 (binary). 8 (dec) is the 4th position from the right.

To check if 8 has been added to the integer you use something like:

If BitAnd($bFlag, 8) Then MsgBox(16, "FlagTest", "Flag 8 has been set!")

If you're combining styles on a control or GUI, don't add the values together, use BitOr, at least that's what I've always been told to do. Otherwise you end up with the wrong number, and the wrong style bits are being set.

If I posted any code, assume that code was written using the latest release version unless stated otherwise. Also, if it doesn't work on XP I can't help with that because I don't have access to XP, and I'm not going to.

Why should adding integers or using BitOr make a difference?

It only makes a difference when improperly used. If the bit position is already set Bitor doesn't set it twice whereas the additon leads to a wrong result.

Try adding an integer that's an odd number or a negative number, and then BitOr the same numbers, different results returned.

When working with styles I always use the predefined variables. In this case adding the styles as integers or using Bitor on this variables doesn't make a difference as long as you don't add them twice.

But you are right: Using BitOr always gives you a correct result.

I always use the variables myself, I have read that I should be using BItOr rather than just adding them together so that is what I do. I just looked through a few of the xxxConstants.au3 files and its very rare to find an odd or negative number used as one of the constants.

Hi all,

Have a look at the Setting Styles tutorial in the Wiki - I put an example in there to explain why BitOR was the correct way to combine styles. Plus a few other tips...
