compiled script (*.exe) does not terminate when invoked from batch

hello forum,

i have a compiled script "mytool.exe" which i invoke through *.bat:

start "title" /b /wait "mytool.exe" -silent
echo done ...

the problem is:

the exe does not "return" - it stays active in taskmanager. i need to manually kill the process.

my last line of script code is: Exit(0)

additional notes: i'm using autoit 3.3.6.1, mytool is compiled in GUI mode.

Is this an AutoIt issue or do you need help creating a batch script? Secondly why are you using an old version of AutoIt? I think to get a clear answer you post your code because if you Exit a loop (for example) then the process will terminate.

Guess you script does terminate at all so show some script code where you have the problem with.

apologies. i confused myself by trying many things in different directions.

my current issue is not caused by invocation through *.bat file.

instead, the symtpom happens when my tool is creating a COM object through ObjCreate(). in this case the exe does not terminate - even after calling Exit(0).

i will post additional details once i nailed it down.

How is it you call Exit(0) ?

This is from the Help file about Exit, so you only need to use Exit or not at all in some cases.

The default is 0. Scripts normally set an errorlevel of 0 if the script executed properly; error levels 1 and above typically indicate that the script did not execute properly.

in the meantime i have upgraded my project to 3.3.8.1 - still the same symptoms for all three scenarios:

- run compiled script (*.exe) by double-click

- run compiled scirpt (*.exe) through batch file

- run script from scite

my last lines of code:

_Main()
ConsoleWrite("going to exit(0) ..." & @CRLF)
Exit(0)

symptom details:

- the autoit systray icon disappears (OK)

- the process does not terminate. needs to be killed through taskmanager or autoit menu entry (FAIL)

when running the script from scite i need to go to tools -> stop execution (Ctrl+Break) and then i'm getting this message in the output window:

>Process failed to respond; forcing abrupt termination...
>Exit code: 1    Time: 142.433

the problem does not appear if in my code execution i skip the COM ObjCreate.

i have tried to script some mock-up repro-code. but with the repro code everything works fine ...

Without a reproducer it is very unlikely someone can help unfortunately, except to advise

you liberally error check throughout your code to find where the problem lies.

yes, i know. i'm trying hard to come up with some repro code.

however, i was hoping someone might get an idea by just seing the symptoms:

• on program end the systray icon disappears
• but the process still exists in taskmanager

there is no difference whether i simply let the code run to the last line (to have it reach end of scope) or whether i append as last line "Exit(0)".

what on earth could be the reason for a compiled script exe to not terminate itself?

When it is hung up using another resource is one reason.

From what I can see neither AutoIt or your system are at fault, it appears to be how you've coded it. My last suggestion is strip back your code and start from scratch, re-building the functionality as you go. This is what I've done in the past when I was learning.

Do you have any OnAutoItExitRegister() in your script?

no, i'm not using any OnAutoItExitRegister()

this is the current status:

right now i'm using the following workaround: i'll spawn a second, dedicated *.exe process to perform the COM activities.

this way my parent mytool.exe terminates fine.

if time allows i'll still try to come up with some repro code ...
