Autoit sql or Firebird's Sql??

Recommended Posts

A friend of my brother says I should rather use Firebirds sql instead of autoits sql? becuase Sqlite sometime has a lot of updates and patches, is this true? Personally I think it depends on me. If firebird's better does autoit support sql functions for firebird?

Technically there is no AutoIt SQL, it uses the SQLite dll from sqlite.org. I suppose which one you choose depends on what you're doing with it, and whether or not the SQL you're using supports it and the performance of it.

If I posted any code, assume that code was written using the latest release version unless stated otherwise. Also, if it doesn't work on XP I can't help with that because I don't have access to XP, and I'm not going to.

Ah ok thanks man, I like learning new Stuff that'll make my world easier, So I don't know everything - especially when I get things wrong hahahahaha!! Atleast I know I don't have to feel like an Idiot becuase Even all you pro coders had to start somewhere(And I try to learn all the udfs to get familiar with it, even if I am not using it my current project, tell me can I create Sql databases and tables within and manage the Tables with autoit if I use SqliTE expert? I have a few Great Examples like Sqllite_easy_v1.1. and My Sql? Another thing please Correct me if I am wrong, I am using Sql for the purpose if handling Huge amounts of Data, right now I use Excel and IniWrite etc Functions to Manage my Data, Am I going to use sql for the right purpose?

Thanks Mate

I'm not a SQL expert, so they might have a different take on it, but as I see it you're going in the right direction, especially if using a large database.

It depends on your context and how frequently you expect software to be fixed and upgraded as an official release.

Firebird currently has something around 800 open bugs, 770 being unscheduled. If you count the nightly builds, I'd say that Firebird fix rate is much more hard to follow than SQLite (new release schedule every 2 monthes, unless something big enough dictates otherwise).

FireBird can scale beyond SQLite (144Tb limit) and use partitionning and many advanced features.

Now you shouldn't compare these two engine on this basis. Firebird aims at corporate use while SQLite is, well "lite". Your smartphone uses SQLite, not FireBird, same for your GPS, same for your middle-range router and every installation of Abode products and Firefox browser.

SQLite has a number of limitations (being lite!) but is still a very powerful, fast and reliable engine. It also enjoys direct support thru the standard UDF included in every AutoIt release. Yet if you plan to directly share your DB among a bunch of users over a network, SQLite is not (currently) the right tool for the job unless you use SQLite as a centralized server for web clients (a huge number of large sites run this configuration).

OTOH, SQLite is a simple DLL (or C library) with a footprint in the 180..700Kb depending on build options, while FireBird is at least 10 times larger. SQLite doesn't require any installation, configuration or maintenance as a serverless engine. SQLite DBs are portable on any platform you can dream of without any change. SQLite memory DBs can sustain 150 000 large inserts/s in fine-tuned applications. It's very easy to expand SQLite functions with your own. Etc.

Post a rough description of your application for more precise advice.

acidmanner,

What exactly do you call "huge amounts of data" that you're handling with .ini files or Excel?

I'd scale things like this (rough estimate):

0 < tiny < 40 Mb < small < 400 Mb < medium < 4 Gb < large < 2 Tb < huge < 140 Tb

  • 2 weeks later...

nah its basically just for round about say 400 mb data at most...

Nor is it for collecting data from multiple users on a network...

Then SQLite will perform well, no question.

If you ever run into performance problems lateron, export the data to an SQL-file, choose another database engine, import the data and modify your script for the new engine.
