How to count number of occurrences in string

Recommended Posts

G'day everyone

I have a string like this:

one[two[[three[four five] six[ seven[

and I want to count the number of "[" in that string. Is there a simple way to do it? I can use StringSplit and count the items but I'm hoping for something even simpler.

So I just need to count the number of occurrences of a short string (actually, just one character) in a longer string.

Thanks

Samuel

StringReplace() can also count for you, amount of replacements is in @extended, see helpfile.

Example:

Local $sText = "one[two[[three[four five] six[ seven["
StringReplace($sText, "[", "whatever")
MsgBox(0, "", @extended & " occurrences")

You can do it this way.

$String = "one[two[[three[four five] six[ seven["

$String = StringReplace($String, "[", "[")
MsgBox(0, "", "Number found = " & @Extended)

If I posted any code, assume that code was written using the latest release version unless stated otherwise. Also, if it doesn't work on XP I can't help with that because I don't have access to XP, and I'm not going to.

I have another solution, not simple but it's a one-liner... :sorcerer:

Basically, the idea consists in using a regexp to remove all characters from the string, except the one you're counting, and then get the resulting string length.

; Count the number of x (x is NOT a special character for regexp)
$CountNormal = StringLen(StringRegExpReplace($YourString, "[^x]*", ""))

; Count the number of x ("[" IS a special character for regexp and needs to be backslashed)
$CountSpecial = StringLen(StringRegExpReplace($YourString, "[^\[]*", ""))

That's not very efficient as @extended returns the number of occurrences. Reducing lines doesn't make the code simpler in my humble opinion.

This isn't pretty, and it's a decade later, but Regex in my experience is much faster. https://www.autoitscript.com/autoit3/docs/functions/StringRegExp.htm

$file = "one[two[[three[four five] six[ seven["
Local $matches = StringRegExp($file, "\[", 3) ;<- tries to return an array of matches or @error code 0 if array is invalid, @error code 1 if invalid or no matches.
local $count = IsArray($matches) ? UBound($matches) : 0
ConsoleWrite(@CR&"Number of Brackets: "&$count&@CR)
