While and If Statement Question

Recommended Posts

I found a sample script that used a while and if statment :

While 1
Local $file = FileFindNextFile($search)
If @error Then ExitLoop
WEnd

My questions are:

What is the "1" after the "while" referring to?

When does the loop know when to stop?

Is the if statment a shortend version? because it doesn't use an endif

What is @error?

any help would be greatly appreciated

thanks

Read the help file, all will be answered within.

If I posted any code, assume that code was written using the latest release version unless stated otherwise. Also, if it doesn't work on XP I can't help with that because I don't have access to XP, and I'm not going to.

in basic @error is error returned by the previous function in case of error.

while 1 is always true and it is terminated by exit loop when condition is (@error=1) true

1) "While 1" is like "While True": 1=True, 0=False.

2) The loop cannot stop by satisfying the "While" condition, so it stops when the code forces it to (i.e. when it gives the command ExitLoop). Notice that it only gives the command when @error is equal to 1, because as I said 1=True (so, for @error=1, the code becomes "If 1 Then..." which is equivalent to "If True Then..."

3) Yes, it is shortened. Instead of

If (condition) Then
(something)
EndIf
it is on a single line: If (condition) Then (something). Notice that you can only use this form when (something) has only got 1 instruction/command.

4) It is a special variable, that you can't modify (until some recent AutoIt version, with the SetError() command), that tells you if the code encountered some error or not, and sometimes tells you which kind of error.

I'm guessing they're not getting the subtle hints.
