Need some guidance with a program crashing

Recommended Posts

This is going to be like finding a needle in a haystack but you have to start somewhere. I have written a program that runs in the background 24/7 whenever the computer is on. No GUI involved. It is in an infinite loop monitoring for the existance for certain Windows.

On rare, rare occassion it crashes with the "Autoit has encountered a problem and needs to close". I think it use to be called a GPF. It doesn't happen often enough that there is any rhyme or reason to it. I cannot recreat the crash. Jupiter aligns with Mars sort of thing.

I guess I am looking for general guidlines, do' and dont's, suggestions on things I need to look at. Don't know where to start. Any suggestions?

Without seeing the script, it's like trying to find a needle in a haystack with no needle and no haystack.

If I posted any code, assume that code was written using the latest release version unless stated otherwise. Also, if it doesn't work on XP I can't help with that because I don't have access to XP, and I'm not going to.

I hereby grant any person the right to use any code I post, that I am the original author of, on the autoitscript.com forums, unless I've specifically stated otherwise in the code or the thread post. If you do use my code all I ask, as a courtesy, is to make note of where you got it from.

Back up and restore Windows user files _Array.au3 - Modified array functions that include support for 2D arrays.  -  ColorChooser - An add-on for SciTE that pops up a color dialog so you can select and paste a color code into a script.  -  Customizable Splashscreen GUI w/Progress Bar - Create a custom "splash screen" GUI with a progress bar and custom label.  -  _FileGetProperty - Retrieve the properties of a file  -  SciTE Toolbar - A toolbar demo for use with the SciTE editor  -  GUIRegisterMsg demo - Demo script to show how to use the Windows messages to interact with controls and your GUI.  -   Latin Square password generator

That is why I phrased the question like I did. The code is massive and much too much to upload. That coupled with the fact that the GPF only happens once every three or for weeks is going to make it tough. That is what I was simple asking for some possible area to look over. The script does serial I/O in a infinite loop. SSends a command to a modem and receives a response. It does this about every second.

I am really just looking for general do's and don't along with possible debug solutions. It does not appear to be a CommError as it blows right by error handlers and crashes.

Those kind of problems are nasty, i would divide the code in several separate scripts, and run them all in loop just like the big one does, with the necessary modifications obviously, then one of the scripts should crash, then you investigate on that particular code. You can divide only in 2 or 4.. and work from there.

Have you monitored the pgm for memory usage?

Do you use/need an error handler?

Are you interrogating the results of all function calls?

(...rumors of a memory leak were started by the Mayans...)
