ShellExecuteWait and UAC prompt

Recommended Posts

Good day. I'm making my script run an installer, and display a message after installer closes. Basically:

ShellExecuteWait -> Installer -> message

Question: installer requires admin rights and thus my script will provoke a UAC prompt to come up. Could it possibly cause a message to appear prematurely? I.e. script sends a call to installer, but installer execution is being halted, so the script, theoretically, might consider it as if installer process is ended and display a message prematurely.

I'm asking this because I don't know what exactly UAC does to halt the application execution. So my question is simple: will this happen or not? I have no way to test it atm.

It shouldn't happen, because as far as I saw, UAC halts the entire OS, not just an application being executed. But I need a confirmation to this assumption.

P.S. I don't want to assign admin rights requirement to my script unless it's necessary.

The installer isn't going to return an exit code due to a UAC prompt.

In order to not have a UAC prompt later during your script though, add #requireadmin to your script, so that your script will be the one prompting for UAC, and anything called from within it inherits the allow.

Or use

#AutoIt3Wrapper_res_requestedExecutionLevel= ;None, asInvoker, highestAvailable or requireAdministrator (default=None)

Then it gets added to the programs manifest.

If I posted any code, assume that code was written using the latest release version unless stated otherwise. Also, if it doesn't work on XP I can't help with that because I don't have access to XP, and I'm not going to.

I hereby grant any person the right to use any code I post, that I am the original author of, on the autoitscript.com forums, unless I've specifically stated otherwise in the code or the thread post. If you do use my code all I ask, as a courtesy, is to make note of where you got it from.
