The def does not turn RED, nor is it activated by the space bar (like distributed abbreviations). It does work with CTRL-B, however. If you insist on doing it manually, you need to add the abbreviation itself to au3.keywords.user.abbreviations.properties as well - then SciTE recognises it and does its highlighting magic.
