Intercepting a Logoff, Shutdown or Restart

 Share

Recommended Posts

I won't even go in to the bone-headed move I pulled but for the first time today I realized a program I wrote more or less chashes out when the user logs off, shuts down or restarts. I have files open, dlls loaded, etc. that aren't politely cleaned up until the user quits. Bad, bad, programming on my part.

So Window must broadcast when a users logs off, shuts down or restarts the computer. How do I receive notification of those three events in my program so I can politely clean things up and exit?

JohnOne is correct, this will even be called if someone was to manually close your application from the task manager.

Thanks guys. I have been playing with it. My first thought was to include the OnAutoItExitUnregister as one of the first lines in this function to avoid recursion when I got to the point of actually wanting to exit after closing files and such but it seems like things have a problem with the OnAutoItExitUnregister.

I have a function Quit() which I want to execute either when users logoff or the computer is rebooted. The OnAutoItExitRegister("Quit") seems to work but there are occassions I want to call that function from withing the program. Within the program I changed where I called Quit() and just put in "exit" assuming the "exit" would just envoke the OnAutoItExitRegister and in turn quit but when I "exit" I get a GPF. I am doing something a little wrong by changing my Quit() to "exit" when I want to stop the program internally. ANy ideas?

CountyIT,

There should be no need for you to ever call that function directly - it runs when you exit regardless of the manner of the exit. So all you need to do is Exit and let the function run automatically - calling it directly means it runs twice and that is probably what is giving you the crash as it tries to reclose things that are already closed. ;)

I am starting to see that. I use @ExitMethod in the Quit() and when I call Quit() directly I get the error that @ExitMethod is an unknown macro.

So if I actually use the line "exit" in the quit() function won't it call itself? As a general programming rule should I make OnAutoItExitUnregister one of the first lines in the Quit()?

Working very, very well with two exceptions. It does not seem to work when I kill the program with Task Manager or when I kill it with ProcessClose() from another program. It does work when logging off, rebooting or using "exit" from withing the program.

When you kill a process using the Task Manager or ProcessClose() the closed process isn't informed by a message and therefore your function isn't triggered.

Do those other threads provide some code?

You tried OnAutoItExitRegister and if it doesn't work then you need some other code.

Oh yes. It is working like a champ. There was a reference above to the OnAutoItExitRegister being invoked even when the user kills the program from Task Manager and/or uses ProcessClose() from another AutoIt program. Here is another reference to it:

Both water and I believe it to be incorrect. That the OnAutoItExitRegister will NOT be invoked by either killing the program from task manager or using a ProcessClose() from another AutoIt program.

I used the following script to test:

OnAutoItExitRegister("OnAutoItExit")
While 1
Sleep(20)
WEnd

Func OnAutoItExit()
MsgBox(0, "", "OnAutoItExit: @ExitCode = " & @exitCode & " @ExitMethod = " & @exitMethod)
EndFunc

It works when

  • User logs of
  • Script is run by pressing F5 in SciTE and then lick on Exit in the tray menu
  • The PC is being shut down
It doesn't work when
  • killed through the task manager
Even this talks about non-forced shutdown so I'm not sure it is possible to catch a forced shutdown. Edited by water

I'm rather glad about that, I'm sure there is some boffin somewhere who will be able to accomplish it, but when I force a shutdown, I want it to do just that, if it were to defy that I'd consider it malware.

Reminds me of the Adobe Reader autoupdater, starts updating the Reader program and absolutely refuses to let you shut down the computer normally while it's updating.

If I posted any code, assume that code was written using the latest release version unless stated otherwise. Also, if it doesn't work on XP I can't help with that because I don't have access to XP, and I'm not going to.

Don't know how I came up with that assumption, just tested and I was wrong. Sorry.
