Run and Shellexecute

Noviceatthis,

The clue is in the parameters you pass:

- Run - an executable which will "run" using the parameters passed to it

- ShellExecute - a file which will be run by Windows using the executable associated with that file type

Both of these will run Notepad with a specified file (assuming Notepad is your default text file editor: ;)

Run("Notepad.exe fred.txt")

ShellExecute("fred.txt")

All clear? :)

Noviceatthis,

I believe it was Melba23 that pointed out to me some time ago that ShellExecute can also be used to open a program in a specific mode. For instance, InfoPath has a design mode. I was unable to open it in design mode with the Run command, but with ShellExecute I was. Here's how:

$filename = InputBox ("File Name", "Please enter the InfoPath file path and name to be republished.", "", "", 635,125)
ShellExecute ($filename, "", "", "design")
WinWait ("(Design) Microsoft Office InfoPath")
;commands to work with the file in Design mode go here

Using the Run command, I was simply opening the InfoPath form in normal mode when I needed to open it in Design mode in order to republish it.

Good luck in your endeavors.

Meds.  They're not just for breakfast anymore. :'(

You could use

Run("Infopath /design")

Which will open Infopath in design mode as well.

If I posted any code, assume that code was written using the latest release version unless stated otherwise. Also, if it doesn't work on XP I can't help with that because I don't have access to XP, and I'm not going to.

I hereby grant any person the right to use any code I post, that I am the original author of, on the autoitscript.com forums, unless I've specifically stated otherwise in the code or the thread post. If you do use my code all I ask, as a courtesy, is to make note of where you got it from.
