What exactly does Opt("WinSearchChildren", 1) do?

I found a script on the forums that uses this option and the script was driving me nuts because it was causing all sorts of issues when the option was included. As soon as I commented that out, the script continued to function without a problem, and the issues I encountered went away.

Here's the back story. I found a very old script in the Examples scripts forum that creates a toolbar for SciTE that gives you access to some of the commands and tools for the editor. I've been working on modifying it, updating it as needed, and in general trying to improve it somewhat. The issue I found was that when it was running and I opened the Find dialog in SciTE, the Find window never showed up. I could click on the scite main window and it would show up again, but if I clicked on the Find window, it would immediately disappear until I clicked on the SciTE window again. Very frustrating to say the least. So, I tried troubleshooting the script to see what was causing it, and finally tracked it down to this option.

The help file was useless as to explaining what this option is supposed to do, so I was wondering if anyone had any insights as to why it would cause this, and what was this option supposed to be doing?

Allows the window search routines to search child windows as well as top-level windows.

0 = Only search top-level windows (default)

1 = Search top-level and child windows

If I posted any code, assume that code was written using the latest release version unless stated otherwise. Also, if it doesn't work on XP I can't help with that because I don't have access to XP, and I'm not going to.

With Opt("WinSearchChildren", 0) "the function searches among windows that are child windows of the desktop.", with Opt("WinSearchChildren", 1) also the children of those are searched too (where controls are child windows too).

Yeh that option isn't needed, plus the title for SciTE in WinWait should be changed. It's all documented in SciTE Jump.

So, if it's for use with WinList, how come it causes the issue I saw with the script I was working with? Sounds like it's doing something else weird.

If I posted any code, assume that code was written using the latest release version unless stated otherwise. Also, if it doesn't work on XP I can't help with that because I don't have access to XP, and I'm not going to.

I think it's not related only to WinList(), but to all Win* functions.
