Wildcard Folder search and Eraser

Recommended Posts

I'm trying todo a wildcard search of the entire C: drive to find folders which have a value of "xxxxx" for example and then run "eraser" on them to securely delete them from the machine, using the example of wildcards in the help file I can get my script to return the name of the folder's it's found on the root of c: but I have two problems, the first is that it only returns the folders with value of "xxxxx" on the root of C: and not for example any in C:Program Files and the second when the folder names are passed to eraser, eraser return an error saying : "File not found. Nothing to erase. (xxxxx )" if someone could point me in the right direction i would be most grateful.

Local $eraser = ("Path to eraser")

; Shows the filenames of all files in the current directory.
Local $search = FileFindFirstFile( "\*xxxxx*" )

; Check if the search was successful
If $search = -1 Then
    MsgBox(0, "Error", "No files/directories matched the search pattern")
    Exit
EndIf

While 1
    Local $folder = FileFindNextFile($search)
    If @error Then ExitLoop

    RunWait ( $eraser & "\Eraserl.exe -folder "" " & $folder & " ""-subfolders -method Random 2" )
WEnd

; Close the search handle
FileClose($search)

I would suggest taking a look at Melba's _RecFileListToArray UDF in the Examples forum. You could do something similar to the example below, though it may take you quite a while if you're parsing through the entire C drive:

#include <Array.au3>
#include <RecFileListToArray.au3>

$aArray = _RecFileListToArray("C:\", "Microsoft", 2, 1, 1, 2)
    _ArrayDisplay($aArray, "All Microsoft folders in C:")

BigAl,

Look in my sig for the link to the RecFileListToArray UDF - and, yes, searching the the whole C: drive will take a while. :whistle:

Surprisingly, this:

#include <Array.au3>
#include <RecFileListToArray.au3>

$aArray = _RecFileListToArray("C:\", "*", 2, 1, 1, 2)
    _ArrayDisplay($aArray, "All folders in C:")

returned all 45775 folders in 44 seconds :)

JLogan3o13,

If only you knew how much time I have spent optimising that code...and some people still complain that it is far too slow.  ;)

Hi, thanks for the replies I'll have a look at your RecFileListToArray UDF Melba23.

To be fair I could probably just look on C: and C:Program Files instead of searching though every folder on the system, I was just being over cautious.

They should try doing that on Windows Explorer and see how long THAT takes, it can take several minutes+ to get a listing of all files and folders in the C: drive in Explorer.

If I posted any code, assume that code was written using the latest release version unless stated otherwise. Also, if it doesn't work on XP I can't help with that because I don't have access to XP, and I'm not going to.

I use Listary instead (not AutoIt related.)
