_GuiToolTip UDF on Windows 2000

Hi all,

I am building a script using the _GuiToolTip UDF that needs to be able to run on a operating systems that are Windows 2000 and later. Unfortunately I am not able to get the ToolTip to display on the Win2K computers. I tried it on WinXP and Win7 and it works great. Is there a parameter that needs to be set differently or a DLL that needs to be on the Win2K computers to get the ToolTip to display?

Post a reproducer script that doesn't work on Win2K but does work on XP and above,something might stand out. I wouldn't expect anything immediate considering how old the OS is, and the number of people with access to it.

If I posted any code, assume that code was written using the latest release version unless stated otherwise. Also, if it doesn't work on XP I can't help with that because I don't have access to XP, and I'm not going to.

Thank you for your tutorial and examples on using the _GuiToolTip UDF. It was most helpful.

Here is the code for my question regarding the ToolTip not showing up in Windows 2000. The code below displays the ToolTip in XP but not 2K. Thank you for your help.

Search google (or similar) for tooltips_class32 Windows 2000 as I cam across this quote in my search...

 

Balloon tooltips work only in Windows 2000/XP; in the previous versions of Windows you'll see old-style rectangular tooltips.

Hi Guinness,

Thank you for your research. I am researching it right now and see the same comment about balloon tooltips only working in 2K/XP.

For some reason, I cannot get the code to give me a tooltip of any type on 2K - balloon or rectangular. I have tried the script on two Win2K boxes and neither of them will display the tooltip.

I saw some information about it maybe being related to the COMCTL32.DLL so I will check that out as well. I will keep researching and post a solution if I can find one. Thanks again for your help.

There may be something in the implementation of the UDF with regards to Win2K, but I looked through it and everything I checked said that it should work for Win2K and up, unless there's something funky with the installation of Windows on those machines. I suppose for those machines you could always use a simple ToolTip, or GUICtrlSetTip for specific controls, on the 2K boxes.

Maybe there is a registry that needs to be enabled? A balloon registry entry perhaps? I honestly don't have Windows 2000, so it's a little difficult for me to replicate the problem.

Thank you BrewManNH and Guinness,

I am using the _GuiToolTip UDF because the ToolTip as a lot of information in it, and I want to give the user time to read it. With the _GuiToolTip I can make the ToolTip persistent until the user moved from the control.

I am willing to use a different UDF. Is there anyway to get GuiCtrlSetTip or any other ToolTip UDF to create a ToolTip that is persistent until the user moves from the control?

No problem. Did you compare the two to see what was different? I must confess I've never used this UDF, just remember seeing it when I used to search the Forum to learn AutoIt.
