The ping() function's timeout parameter?

Recommended Posts

I have read in several threads that, if there is no connection, ping() times out after 15 seconds, independent of the value of the timeout parameter. So, to me, ping's timeout parameter is of limited use. Am I missing something?

This question arose from calling ping to determine whether my router is connected and working properly: Ping('192.168.0.1',200).

I have also read http://www.autoitscript.com/wiki/Interrupting_a_running_function . I am thinking that ping() should be handling the multi-processing, but it appears that it doesn't.

The help file says 4 seconds is the default, not 15, not sure where you read that.

With my network card disabled, the Ping returns in about 5ms with an error code set.

That link is for a non-native function, not an internal one, and what do you mean by multiprocessing?

If I posted any code, assume that code was written using the latest release version unless stated otherwise. Also, if it doesn't work on XP I can't help with that because I don't have access to XP, and I'm not going to.

Many thanks for your reply. Here is my script (which suffers significant delays when I disconnect the PC from the router):

Opt('TrayIconDebug',1)
Do
    $nRouter = Ping("192.168.0.1",200)
    $eRouter = @error
    $nInternet = Ping("www.example.com",400)
    $eInternet = @error

    $tit = "Check "&StringLeft(@ComputerName,1)&StringLower(StringMid(@ComputerName,2)&"'s connections")
    if $nRouter>0 Then
$msg = "Connected to the LAN: to the router and back: "&GetMsecs($nRouter)
    Else
$msg = "Not connected to the LAN: "&GetErrMsg($eRouter)
    EndIf
    $msg &= @CRLF
    if $nInternet>0 Then
$msg  &= "Connected to the Internet: there and back: "&GetMsecs($nInternet)
    Else
$msg &= "Not connected to the Internet: "&GetErrMsg($eInternet)
    EndIf
    If $nRouter>0 And $nInternet>0 Then
        $style = 0 + 64 ; i in circle
    Else
        $style = 0 + 32 ; question mark
    EndIf
    $ans = MsgBox($style+5,$tit,$msg )  ; retry, cancel
Until $ans = 2  ; cancel

Func GetErrMsg($err)
    Switch $err
        Case 1
            Return "offline"
        case 2
            Return "unreachable"
        Case 3
            Return "bad destination"
        Case Else
            Return "reason unknown"
    EndSwitch
EndFunc

Func GetMsecs($n)
    If $n= 1 Then
        Return $n&" millisecond"
    Else
        Return $n&" milliseconds"
    EndIf
EndFunc

I saw 15 seconds in post #9 in

I also met it elsewhere.

If you want to check if you're connected to the network, then there is no need for pinging. Look at _WinAPI_IsNetworkAlive in WinAPIEx (check out the AutoIt beta) plus if you want to know whether you're connected to the Internet, then look at _WinAPI_IsInternetConnected (Vista+).

c.haslam, have you looked at the example in the help file under Ping?! It word for word does what you're asking, just change the URL to the IP or DNS name of the machine you want to ping.
