Is AutoIt Suitable This Application?

Hello,

I would like to create a program by which a user can learn foreign vocabulary quickly. To do this, basicalIy I need to display the word spelled in a non- english alphabet, suggest different alternative definitions, let the user choose one via a radio button, keep track of the score of correct/ incorrect hits, and go on to the next word.

I've just recently discovered AutoIt, and it is slow going. I haven't had success, so far, just displaying the foreign word,  which is in a  Microsoft Word file.

1. How do I display the word?

2. Is AutoIt the right means for such a program?

3. Is AutoIt used fore any commercial applications?

4. Would I be better off trying to develolpment the program in Visual Basic 6.0 or Java? ( I found AutoIt attractive because I was familiar with BASIC, 30 years ago, and I have very limited financial resources)

Any advice would be appreciated.

basically yes. you can display any unicode character (if you installed the right font in your computer). commercial application would be limited because the code is decompilable = not secure.

Edit: but it's better to wait for a moderator's answer .

1. Take a read through the help file, specifically the GUI functions. You can create a custom GUI to display your application.

2. "Right" depends upon your point of view. Can it handle such a task? Certainly. Are there more powerful languages? Definitely. It comes down to how familiar you are with other languages, and the time you would want to invest in learning them.

3. While I agree with Edano about the lack of complete security around AutoIt (or any language for that matter), it is in use in corporate and commercial areas all over the world.

4. Again, "better off" is something only you can answer based on your familiarity with other languages.

I highly suggest reading through the help file, and the wiki, and giving it a go for yourself. If you run into issues, you have a large community waiting to assist

I would say "for sure yes", but the actual implementation will involve you doing some basic definitions. Especially how to store source word, different meanings and correct answer. And of course, which data structure you will use to display, compare etc.

As for commercial: well, I have used AutoIT a few times for commercial program. Just depends on how well you trust recipient and their attempt to "get to the source code".

You should have suggested FileInstall to install Unicode fonts in the event that they're missing. There is nothing wrong with selling your AutoIt applications, I've sold mine, whether they can be decompiled or not.

Why a moderator? Plenty of people are capable of answering this.

I have just the software that I made a few years ago that will do just what you ask - it runs in Internet explorer as an active X object and runs locally on the user's PC. You build the test in notepad. Real easy to use. If your interested I can send it to you and show you how to use it. I used this software for when I need to learn something new and I need to test myself.

If you can post an example question on how you want to present it, I can put it in my test building app and show you how it would work.

look at this post. the script is 6 years old and probably not working anymore, but it shows the capabilities you are interested in. it's amazing !
