Fastest way of parsing thosands of log files

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone.

I'm building a GUI that is supposed to enable everyday users to get some info from a lot of cryptic log files. In this case it can be ALOT of log files. We are talking tens of thousands and perhaps more over time. So my question is, what is the fastest way of parsing them all? The log in itself is not large perhaps 2-3Kb

Ghansk you for your input.

Using a regular expression. Look at StringRegExp in the help file.

For loops, FileListToArray etc. to start with some native functions.

Load the file list into an array.  Use FileOpen to open a log file in read mode.  Use FileRead to read each character or line.  Or if they are ini functions then you have the INIRead, write, etc functions in your tool arsenal.  More information might help us out.

My opinion:

If you want fast, then don't try to access everything all at once.  Make a way for the users to input what they're looking for, then retrieve only those records and parse them.  If you absolutely need to access everything at once, then load & parse everything at the start and use a progress bar and an "Estimated Time Remaining: " counter for the the user.  Then you just pull from your array(s).

Alright. So basicly the fastest way possible is to put all the files in an array, Then loop that array and use fileopen, fileread, fileclose for all files.

Im thinking of just loading everyting into a huge variable and then use regex on that variable to get the info that i need. Or shoudl I use sothing else?

Erm...no that's not the fastest way until we know what the structure of the log files are.

If digging into that many log files is going to be a routine, daily task, I'd advise loading them all once in a database using a suited schema. Then performing any kind of query will be very fast.

This wonderful site allows debugging and testing regular expressions (many flavors available). An absolute must have in your bookmarks.

I did some testing now. I just loaded all the date from every singel xml file into one big varibale. Then i did regex on that to get the data i wanted.

5007 files finished in 7,3 sec. I guess that will eb acceptable for now. I just have to wait and se how many files it will be in the end.

Thank you for your help.
