What is the best way to copy files?

Ive done a number of backup programs over the years and moved from xcopy to robocopy which i still currently use ,i don't use any particularly unusual switches, just a normal backup really

$sCopyParams = '/COPY:D /S /ZB /XJD /XJF /R:0 /W:0 /XA:SHT /NJS'

 

 

I was wondering is this the fastest way to do it?

Does FileCopy Or FileMove or DirCopy and DirMove have a speed increase against robocopy?

And can they be trusted to complete a backup completely or should they not be used in this kind of context

we are talking backups upto 400 GB on some customers machines which we backup to another machine then back through the network after the customers machine is back on its feet.

Im aware the drive speed has a large factor in the process, i just wondered if there were gains to be had with the other options?

Have you tried any testing on your own, to benchmark? Seems it would be fairly easy to create a quick test, maybe just one large dir

i once made that experiment, compared robocopy to xcopy - the difference in speed is redundant, and for large volumes, the robustness of robocopy is well worth your while. also, robocopy log is priceless when it comes to troubleshooting a backup process.

i did not check AutoIt functions for that - and anyway i wouldn't use DirCopy, as it may fail and you'll have no indication of the reason, and no way to overcome it. instead i would recourse the tree, enumerate each folder and loop the files for FileCopy.

my advice - stick to robocopy.

I love TeraCopy, so much better than any native Windows copy program.

If I posted any code, assume that code was written using the latest release version unless stated otherwise. Also, if it doesn't work on XP I can't help with that because I don't have access to XP, and I'm not going to.

To answer your question, the native move/copy commands just use the Windows API, probably the same as XCOPY. So no there is no real difference in speed (a human would notice).

aah ok thx for that insight

As i understand it robocopy is safer for want of a better word with backups.

I will look at the other 2 programs that were mentioned as well and extra way is never a bad thing.

I also use Fastcopy.  It seems to handle long filenames much better than other programs.  I'm not sure what it's doing but where others complain the filename is too long it handles it without a problem.  (My guess is it's not using a windows API.)  It also seems very fast.  You can also adjust the RAM buffer size it uses, and save mutliple groups of settings for backing up.

There's also the free program RichCopy.  But you have to search. it's downloadable via a web article. it's written by an MS employee on his own hook.  It was the only practical way I found to copy Windows.old files over a network.  It's multi-threaded.  I admit though, I only used it for the Windows.old job.  But I do believe it has a Gui front end for choosing options to make it a tad easier to use than pure CLI.
