Another way round an exe?

Recommended Posts

Here's my problem

I wrote a program to simplfy unpacking of files after download but its an exe obviously and people who download are always going to be suspicious of a single .exe for the obvious reasons.

It cannot be rar-ed or anything like that as it has to be runable straight after download.

The only thing i can come up with is to change the file ending to .wtf and have a small cmdfile that runs the exe after renaming it. (which isnt really getting around the problem as such.)

Id prefer not to have an exe but i need to execute my code to unpack the files

Is there an alternative way to distrubute the file?

Any thoughts?

Zip file?

If I posted any code, assume that code was written using the latest release version unless stated otherwise. Also, if it doesn't work on XP I can't help with that because I don't have access to XP, and I'm not going to.

Use Wix or some other tool to convert it into a full-blooded MSI package.

Chimaera,

If they all have AutoIt, better to give them an .a3x file and so get some protection for the code on which you have worked so hard. ;)

But why should they be afraid of your exe if they get it from you - as long as they trust you? Offer some basic reassurances like a file size and an MD5 hash so that they can at least check that the file is the one you say it is. After all, if they are not prepared to trust you, will they even dare to unpack the files you give them?

My software was adopted by some of the uploaders on the usenet

I don't control their content and they just add my file with their upload.

An A3x wouldn't work sorry and i have already looked at MD5 etc but the people using it probably wouldn't know how to check it anyway :)

I have a look at the Wix path JLogan3o13 thx

Ill keep looking
