is there any way to make it so that the computer will recognize new exxtensions and what program to open them with?

for example:

The computer will recognize files with the extension .abc as "Alphabet Files" and it will open with notepad by default.

how would i do this?

thanks

Open up the Windows Explorer (Window Key + E). Then choose Tools>FolderOptions>FileTypes and make a new file type. Look at the existing file type for .txt files for an example.

in programming skins for my *XPClean Menu*

I just did this

saved file as skin.xpc

then, when I wanted

opened skin.xpc

I never registered it, however when the installer places the program on another computer, it recognizes that .xpc belongs to *XPClean Menu*

this worked fine. however, you should try to understand how extentions are registered like jefhal explained
