hello world!

i am trying to remove text/numbers after underscore or dash (including the underscore and dash)

 

 

ERI_WT > ERI

ERI_EWT2 > ERI

ERI-MDI > ERI

ERI-282 > ERI

 

having trouble figuring out how to specify underscore and dash since word specifiers like w include underscore but W doesnt?
 

$test =  StringRegExpReplace($user, "\w[\W]\w", "$1")

You are quite right - I always forget to check the list of characters that require escaping. :>

The following characters should be escaped in RegExs:

[]$^.{}()+\-
as they mean something to the PCRE engine. Sometimes the pattern still works, but you really should escape them every time. ;)

Each of the characters in that list can be used by the PCRE engine to define a pattern. "[]" define an option set; "{}" define a numerical limit, etc, etc. If you do not escape them then you risk the PCRE engine interpreting them in their "action" mode rather than as literal characters. So you should escape them to prevent this. :)

In the case above, it was pure chance that the pattern I used actually worked - the PCRE engine obviously managed to interpret the "-" character as a literal even though it was not escaped - no doubt because the surrounding syntax made no sense to the engine if it interpreted the character as a "action". But you should not rely on the PCRE engine, best to make it explicit - just as with scoping variables. ;)

I'm sorry Melba but jchd's comment about classes is clear :

To include a hyphen (-) in a set, put it as the first or last character of the set or escape it -

BTW the old helpfile also says :

Note that special characters do not retain their special meanings inside a set, with the exception of , ^, -,[ and ] match the escaped character inside a set

meaning that you are allowed to not escape some special characters inside a set

That's correct: PCRE is smart enough to interpret a dangling dash (first or last in a class) as face value at pattern compile time, instead of throwing an error in your face. In fact I believe Perl does it, hence PCRE too but don't sue me if I'm wrong.

This wonderful site allows debugging and testing regular expressions (many flavors available). An absolute must have in your bookmarks.

PCRE v8.33 regexp documentation latest available release and currently implemented in AutoIt beta.

SQLitespeed is another feature-rich premier SQLite manager (includes import/export). Well worth a try.
SQLite Expert (freeware Personal Edition or payware Pro version) is a very useful SQLite database manager.
An excellent eBook covering almost every aspect of SQLite3: a must-read for anyone doing serious work.
SQL tutorial (covers "generic" SQL, but most of it applies to SQLite as well)
