Excute shortcut on remote computer HELP!

Recommended Posts

I am trying to execute a shortcut on 120 computers and am unable to do so. Can anyone assist me in figuring out how to do so?

Here's my code so far:

Run (@ComSpec & " /c \\" & $host & "\c$\Emergency_POD\A02_R (auto)", '', @SW_SHOW)

The $host refers to a .ini file that lists all the host names.

When I try to run this it errors out. Any ideas?

You're running the shortcut on the computer running the script, in case you weren't aware of that.

If I posted any code, assume that code was written using the latest release version unless stated otherwise. Also, if it doesn't work on XP I can't help with that because I don't have access to XP, and I'm not going to.

you could use psexec

Psexec doesn't go as fast as I would like - I currently have this command:

Run(@ComSpec & " /c taskkill /s \\" & $host & " /F /IM iexplore.exe", '', @SW_SHOW)

That runs perfectly and will kill the task on all 120 computers in 20 seconds rather then psexec takes several minutes (at least the way i coded that one) I am failing to understand why I can do taskkill but not open a simple shortcut..

Does it work if you replace "$host" with a name in your .ini file?

No it does not work sadly.. I said above that the command to send taskkill works perfectly - not sure why it won't open a shortcut

"Errors out" sounds like there's an error message displayed?  If so please display it here.

I got the error to go away but now I have a cmd window come up then go right away - I am unable to see what it says though.

Remove the /c and replace it /k, that will keep the command window open after it runs. Also, did you see post #4?

When I run this code:

Run (@ComSpec & " /k \\hostname\c$\Emergency_POD\A02_R (auto)", '', @SW_SHOW)

I get this error:

'hostnamec$Emergency_POD*
ommand,
operable program or batch file.

When I run this code:

Run (@ComSpec & " /k \\" & $host & "c:\Emergency_POD\A02_R (auto)", '', @SW_SHOW)

I get this error:

The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect.

I tried it both ways to avoid running the script on my computer but i'm at a loss now - any ideas? Thanks for the suggestion about the /k btw.

PSExec is how you'd run it remotely, that shortcut is located on the remote computer and the Run function can't run it remotely.

Oh ok - I thought there would be some way to use the "Run" to connect to the hostname then execute the shortcut remotely

Thanks for your help
