Is there a thread already answering this?  Or does somebody already have a quality solution for find closest, which seems to be the bulk of effort?  If not consider this thread a place to one-up your peers at random distribution, while mocking what will no doubt be my terrible brute force answers.

I'd use a memory SQLite database for storing samples since it includes the Rtree module, which will greatly help sorting out which point(s) lie inside a bounding box. It's not enclidean distance but it should work well enough. Certainly worth a try.

I posted that then had to go meet the realtor.  Thanks for teaching me new words Not only were you meaning euclidean i believe, but there are literally hundreds of google returns that will teach you all about enclidean geometry, spelled wrong everytime.
