First time using AutoIT

Hello,

I'm looking to know if AutoIT can automate this task for me.

  • I have Microsoft Excel open.  The document contains a long list of broken links (URLs) in Column A
  • I also have a report from Xenu Link Sleuth open in the Xenu software.  The report contains an even longer list of URLs, including ALL of the URLs from my Excel document

I want to create a macro in this order:

  1. Copy each URL from the Excel document
  2. Open the Xenu Link Sleuth report
  3. Press Ctrl+F (and paste the URL)
  4. Click Find Next
  5. Right-click on the URL
  6. Click URL properties
  7. Click on textarea at bottom of pop-up window
  8. Right-click and Select All
  9. Press Ctrl+C
  10. Paste the URLs in the adjacent MS Excel cell

Rationale: The Xenu Link Sleuth report contains every URL's inbound links in the "URL properties" dialogue window. When fixing broken links, we need to know which pages are linking to the broken one in question. I want my Excel report to have not only the broken links in Column A, but all of the pages linking to the broken URL in the adjacent column. This will complete the report and make it ready for actioning.

Unfortunately, the Xenu software can't export the "URL properties" dialogue window into Excel format, which is why I am looking at alternative solutions such as macros.

Any help is appreciated.

Regarding anything you need to do in Excel, the answer is yes. If you look in the help file you will see a number of Excel functions are shipped natively with the language.

Regarding the Xenu Link Sleuth report, I would suggest you download AutoIt (full version), and use the AutoIt Window Info Tool (in the same directory where you installed AutoIt) on the report window. The Window Tool will give you some information about the window. Post that information back here and we can begin to help you.

Depending on how much you like a challenge, you could create this application functionality yourself. It's nothing magical behind it. I mean I created something like this for building the help file, albeit I didn't check of the link was active. If you need that code then you can dig deep through the AutoIt beta directory for my help file checking script.
