Suggestion for Autoit regarding #include an constants

A common problem I have is trying to use new and old autoit code, where the new code relies on newer UDF's and the UDF's have constants which are identical to constants declared in the the older code.

I have come up with 3 potential solutions

1. access modifyers for #include (e.g. private #include "somefile.au3")

2. The autoit not raising an error if a constant or function was redeclared if it is identical to their original decleration

3. making global variables not used in the main script invisible to other #includes

I hope the autoit team takes one of these ideas onboard as re-writing old autoit code to work with new autoit code is quite anoying.

Others with more knowledge than I will no doubt reply shortly, but just a few tidbits you may not be aware of.

[1} I seem to recall that an #Include file in your script directory, takes precedence over the same one in the AutoIt install 'Include' folder.

[2] Rarely are Global declarations found in Include files. In fact, this is frowned upon, with good reason.

[3] There are or have been helper scripts to update your code to that for the latest AutoIt. Admittedly, I'm still using older versions of AutoIt myself, and not seen or used any updaters for some time.

According to the help file on #include, you actually can decide between two different #Include precedents.

 

The search order used by AutoIt depends on which form of #include you use. The tables below show the order directories are searched using both forms.

 
 Using #include <>
Standard library - The path of the currently running interpreter with "Include" appended is searched. 
User-defined libraries - The registry value mentioned above is read and each directory is searched in the order they appear in. 
Script directory - The directory of the currently executing script. 
 
 Using #include "" (This is the reverse of #include <>).
Script directory - The directory of the currently executing script.

Standard library - The path of the currently running interpreter with "Include" appended is searched. 
 
I find using <> vs "" very helpful in keeping my intended UDFs under control.

I don't think I've made the issue clear enough. I'll give an example.

A couple of weeks ago I was writing a program to open a file on an external HDD, write some data then delete it every 5 minuets (it was to stop the problem with windows 8 turning of the HDD after 5 minuets when watching videos on external HDD's)

I used to >Safely Eject a USB Drive check if a drive was an external HDD,

And I used >_NTService to start the script as a service.

Safely Eject a USB Drive includes winapi which includes securityconstants.

_NTService had some of the same constants as securityconstants (probably was written before they were added)

so securityconstants constants conflicted with _NTService constants

Check for coding errors like missing EndIf/WEnd or defining a Func inside a loop.

Tidy can only check for inconsistancies like For not closed by Next.

Guess the OPs issue has to do with duplicate definitions of variables which should be nicely reported by au3check.

fair enough.  I was believing the OPs issue to be strictly with Global Constants that were previously not declared in the include.

In my head what you are already doing with tidy seems much more difficult than removing any constants from the target file that exist in any of the includes (but my thoughts are easier to think than to code).

One shouldn't expect that UDFs posted in Examples section would work without changes along more recent releases of AutoIt and its number of standard includes. It's the responsability of maintainers or users of example UDFs to make necessary changes.

Similarly, changes introduced in newer releases can't anticipate or workaround issues possibly introduced in unsupported code, even if care is taken to minimize script breaking.

This wonderful site allows debugging and testing regular expressions (many flavors available). An absolute must have in your bookmarks.
Another excellent RegExp tutorial. Don't forget downloading your copy of up-to-date pcretest.exe and pcregrep.exe here

PCRE v8.33 regexp documentation latest available release and currently implemented in AutoIt beta.

SQLitespeed is another feature-rich premier SQLite manager (includes import/export). Well worth a try.
SQLite Expert (freeware Personal Edition or payware Pro version) is a very useful SQLite database manager.
An excellent eBook covering almost every aspect of SQLite3: a must-read for anyone doing serious work.
SQL tutorial (covers "generic" SQL, but most of it applies to SQLite as well)

Obviously, if you are having an issue with use of Global constants, then someone did not abide by best practice.

Solution - Get someone interested in making necessary changes to the UDF's in question.

Just so everyone (who does't know) knows, before we ship the UDFs with the latest AutoIt, jpm runs a unit test which consists of including all the UDFs in a single script to see if there are any issues of possible variable duplication. If it fails we fix it, if it doesn't then of course everyone is happy!

I avoid using globals in include files like the plague, but if global variables are required, they should be named to be unique to the include.

I sometimes go through a process of updateing a downloaded UDF to rename its global variables before I use it.  Unfortunately, I also end up needing to rename some functions to avoid duplicates as well.

Global $MYUDF_MyVar

and

Func _MYUDF_MyFunc()

isn't that tough to do, is it?
