A strange func return failing issue I am curious about.

MsgBox(0, 0, ((1 <> 1) ? (0) : (Test())))

Func Test()
    Return 1
EndFunc   ;==>Test

The above example shows a message box with 1 as the message content.

However I would expect the same result from the below example, but instead returns nothing at all and thus the message remains blank instead of showing the number 1

$Test = Test
MsgBox(0, 0, ((1 <> 1) ? (0) : ($Test)))

Func Test()
    Return 1
EndFunc   ;==>Test

Could someone help me to understand why the second example does not return and thus display 1 in the message box?

You're treating it as a function pointer in the second example. Try $test() to see the same result.

Your recommendation worked. Thanks. Could you unpack what the difference is between using $test vs $test() ? I do not know what you mean when you say a function pointer vs what ever the other option is.

Maybe because you fully understand all of this concept. But when I read that thread I see nothing that answers why it does not return 1. You cannot paste a link to something which does not mention what someone is looking for and claim the answer is there when someone who does not understand all of the aspects of that first class business has no idea how to connect the dots. That is why I come to the forum to get guidance, an explanation to make it very clear about how something works.

I will look at the wiki page and see if that gives me any answers that I can understand, else failing that I am again in a sea of unknowing with nobody simply explaining something to me.

The first one calls the function, hence the return value, the other is just a reference to that method. The answer is in that thread, and I've highlighted the keywords that any programmer should understand.

I think I may have it. So $MessageBox by it's self would be similar to typing MsgBox by it's self, in that it would not do anything since the ( and ) are missing for the variable to act as a function?

But it would still be wise to understand the reasons as to when you should use such thing, not just because you want to "obfuscate" some function using a variable name.
