guinness Posted April 9, 2015 Share Posted April 9, 2015 (edited) Default is a preferred choice, because if you can imagine, I have a function signature like... RegisterPerson($sName, $iAge, $sDOB, $sGender = "N/A", $iSomething = "?", ..., $bHasPension = True) and I simply want to set the last optional parameter only, then normally I would have to read the signature and apply the defaults myself e.g. RegisterPerson("Tom", 29, "1986/09/20", "N/A", "?", ..., False) ; See bHasPension is now false. But if I use the default keyword, I am basically saying "hey, just use the default value for that variable", so instead I don't have to analyse the signature e.g. RegisterPerson("Tom", 29, "1986/09/20", Default, Default, ..., False). Therefore if at some point I decide to change the default value of gender from N/A to Unknown, I don't have to edit the function calls with the default value, but only the function itself. I am future proofing the code and making less work for myself. Do you understand? Also boththose, you wouldn't do something like this in production code would you? iamtheky Posted April 9, 2015 Share Posted April 9, 2015 That just looks odd, Dont think I would even do $aArray[0 + 10]. There are far greater abuses of strings than throwing around empties, since autoit converts all of them to 0. #include<array.au3> Local $aArray["Create An Empty Array"] _ArrayDisplay($aArray) ,-. .--. ________ .-. .-. ,---. ,-. .-. .-. .-. |(| / /\ \ |\ /| |__ __||| | | || .-' | |/ / \ \_/ )/ (_) / /__\ \ |(\ / | )| | | `-' | | `-. | | / __ \ (_) | | | __ | (_)\/ | (_) | | .-. | | .-' | | \ |__| ) ( | | | | |)| | \ / | | | | | |)| | `--. | |) \ | | `-' |_| (_) | |\/| | `-' /( (_)/( __.' |((_)-' /(_| '-' '-' (__) (__) (_) (__) Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
guinness Posted April 9, 2015 Share Posted April 9, 2015 (edited) My aim is not to convince you to change your habits boththose, as I know it's pointless to do so. My aim is to teach clean that they shouldn't adopt this approach of array creation. Thankfully their comment before is promising that they know some standards when it comes to AutoIt programming. I have always said and will continue you to do so, what you do in your code is your business, just don't bring that way of thinking to the Forums if it doesn't mean programming standards. If you think I am being unfair, then think about the bigger picture, you're influencing someone who could potentially apply for an automation job that uses AutoIt, how fair would it be on them if they walk into the job adamant that array initialisation can be done with a string. Edit: Of course this is my opinion and doesn't reflect those of the AutoIt development team. iamtheky Posted April 9, 2015 Share Posted April 9, 2015 (edited) 'not supported' and 'shouldnt' are not the same as "wrong" and "cant", you tend to use those interchangeably. I would just prefer that the facts be separate from the opinion. That person would be 100% correct that empty arrays can be initialised in AutoIt with a string. Whether they should is an opinion based off the intent of the developer. If it works 100% of the time its not wrong, its just different; even if the route taken was unintended. JohnOne Posted April 10, 2015 Share Posted April 10, 2015 Maybe I'm wrong, but I believe AutoIt was created loosely typed so it's easy to use and the user does not need to worry so much about such things. And that is great for a beginner because it's not so confusing to learn and it's very easy to knock up a quick script for something you are doing on the fly. When you start coding in other languages that are not so loosely typed, one might begin to transfer the new languages rules and accepted standard practices to AutoIt. I sometimes do it myself, before invariably deciding that I'm wasting to much time with a script in a language I primarily use for its speed in creating scripts and ease of use. There's nothing wrong with writing AutoIt code this way and we depend on it sometimes in standard UDF's. There is also nothing wrong with nudging people toward a style you believe is good practice, but in my opinion good practice should not be confused with best practice which is largely a matter of opinion. When opinion is projected as fact, in any situation, anywhere, regarding anything, it's going to wind up pissing someone off. In my opinion, of course.
