StringInStr ... any rules on special characters?

 Share

Recommended Posts

I've used StringInStr on countless occasions.  But recently I've tried using it to locate where I've used a particular function in my library of scripts ... for example the function _SetBitmap().

Here are examples of the results I get when I search for variations of the string:

"SetBitmap" ... finds all occurrences

"SetBitmap(" ... finds all occurrences

"_SetBitmap" ... does not find any occurrences

Are there rules for using non-alpha characters?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Instead of using the actual special characters have you tried your string with the Chr function with the ASCII Characters?

Like so:

Chr(95) & "SetBitmap" & Chr(40) & Chr(41)

Just a thought.

This seems to work fine as it finds it on line 4, so can you post a reproducer?:

$test="Line 1" & @CRLF & "Line 2" & @CRLF & "SetBitmap(Line 3}" & @CRLF & "Line 4 SetBitmap()" & @CRLF
ConsoleWrite('$test = ' & $test & @CRLF)
ConsoleWrite('StringInStr($test,"SetBitmap()") = ' & StringInStr($test,"SetBitmap()") & @CRLF)

I guess that it works even if you say it doesn't:

Local $aStr = [ _
    '"SetBitmap" ... finds all occurrences', _
    '"SetBitmap(" ... finds all occurrences', _
    '"SetBitmap()" ... does not find any occurrences', _
    '"_SetBitmap" ... does not find any occurrences', _
    '', _
    'Are there rules for using non-alpha characters?' _
]
For $s In $aStr
    ConsoleWrite('>' & $s & '< ' & (StringInStr($s, '_SetBitmap') ? 'contains' : 'does not contain') & ' the searched string' & @LF)

qwert,

"_SetBitmap" ... does not find any occurrences

Works fine for me when I test based on Jos' code: :)

; Create test string
$test="Line 1" & @CRLF & "Line 2" & @CRLF & "_SetBitmap(Line 3}" & @CRLF & "Line 4 _SetBitmap()" & @CRLF
ConsoleWrite($test & @CRLF)

; Find all occurrences
$sSearch = "_SetBitmap"
$iStart = 1
While 1
    $iFound = StringInStr($test,$sSearch, 0, 1, $iStart)
    If @error Then ExitLoop
    If $iFound Then
        ConsoleWrite('StringInStr($test,"_SetBitmap") = ' & $iFound & @CRLF)
        $iStart = $iFound + 1
    Else
        ExitLoop
    EndIf
WEnd

Thanks to each of you for looking at this.

What got me started doubting was when I got questionable results when searching for:

_Singleton(“MessageScript”, 0)

I kept simplifying the search string and comparing results ... but I may have tripped on my own shirttail.

I'll repeat my tests and post the results tomorrow.

For now, the consensus is "no restrictions on searched-for characters" + operator error.
