HKCU\Control Panel\Colors

You can set all sorts of colors here and totally screw your defaults like I did with some green text on green background.  To make lemonade from my new lime color scheme, If there is a way to get the changes to take affect without restarting, you would have a way to change the appearance of things like msgbox and _ArrayDisplay.

If you're using AutoIt v3.3.10.0+ then you can use _WinAPI_ShellChangeNotify() in WinAPIShellEx.au3.

tried every flag variation that seemed reasonable, no luck. am I doing something wholly incorrect?

Perhaps you need to monitor that broadcase and then REDRAW the window for changes to take affect.

TL;DR: More hassle than it's really worth.
