Com Ports

Could someone please tell me how to get a list of com ports on a W2K PC.

I need to find a specifically named port and then find its com port number. I don't know how to find it, I tried the registry which has numbered keys but they don't follow that they are the com port number..

Any help appreciated.

Thanks

Chris

That kind of helps, thanks.. but how does the information there link in with the description in Device manager/com ports

uh..It's how there is a tab there that says communications port (comx)

Try deleting the entry and find out for sure B)

Seriously, the answer to the question you asked is to enumerate the keys of these ports. If your real

problem is something else, a better problem description would be in order.

It was that the device in the registry seems very non descript.

If a specific device is installed on the computer I need to write to an ini file the location of the hardware.

This would be fine but it would assume that this device always has the value VCP0, but what if there was another USB serial port then it could be VCP1, VCP2 etc..

In device manager there is more of a description

I guess I need to know what com ports there are and what device has been assigned to what com port, but without using the windows gui..

I hope that makes it clearer..

Thanks
