for ... in ... loop with variables (like list, not with an array)

Recommended Posts

Hi

For some time i am wondering if there is a possibility for the following:

$iTest1=100
$iTest2=-1
$sString="Test Hello"

For $element in [$iTest,$iTest2,$sString]
    ; so something
Next

What i mean is to process through the variables without having to declare an array first (where the for...in loop works)

Best,

Thomas

Bro, this post makes sense for me, but because I had the same idea when I started coding AutoIt.

But I imagined something like this:

$var1 = 0
$var2 = 1
$var3 = 2

; Warning: this is almost a pseudo-code. It won't work.

Use $var1, $var2, $var3 as $ref
  ; This would be a loop, and $ref is the
  ;  reference for, in each loop run,
  ; $var1, $var2 and $var3.
  ; As it is just a reference, any changes
  ; that $ref suffers will be suffered by
  ; the original variable. Example:

  $ref += 1 ; add 1 to the value of the referenced variable
EndUse

ConsoleWrite($var1) ; it would be 1
ConsoleWrite($var2) ; it would be 2
ConsoleWrite($var3) ; it would be 3

But I don't think doing so is possible (I never have seen it on any of the programming languages I work with.

That would save a lot of coding. But we do have arrays (and the For...In loops) and functions that do the trick.

If you really feel it would be great, send a feature request on: https://www.autoitscript.com/trac/autoit

You can. Just look at this...

Local $iTest1 = 100
Local $iTest2 = -1
Local $sString = "Test Hello"

Local $aArray = [$iTest1, $iTest2, $sString]
For $element In $aArray
    ConsoleWrite($element & @CRLF)
Next

Yeah that's what I do in AU3 too, but the point of using "Use" (from my example... as it does not exist (and means something very different on PHP)) is that you can make changes on the variables. In PHP it would be something like (also a pseudocode, it won't work):

<?
$var1 = 'Hey, ';
$var2 = 'Hello, ';
$var3 = 'Hi, ';

using($var1, $var2, $var3 as $ref) { // As there are 3 vars,
    echo $ref; // It will echo "Hey, ", then "Hello, ", then "Hi, ", every time the loops runs
    $ref .= 'John Doe'; // it would change the original variables
}

echo $var1; // Hey, John Doe
echo $var2; // Hello, John Doe
echo $var3; // Hi, John Doe

I never saw something similar to it in any of the prog languages I code. But I don't code C# and I'm not crazy lol

As JohnOne said, it isn't possible. I'd suggest really using the standard arrays/loops/functions (passing parameters as references, maybe?).

It seems I misunderstand what the initial intent was in that case.

Hi

OK the initial intent was to have like different variables and loop through them in a for...in loop WITHOUT declarating an array first and assigning the different variable contents to this array (and then looping through this).

Like i said using this code:

$iTest1=100
$iTest2=-1
$sString="Test Hello"

For $element in [$iTest,$iTest2,$sString]
    ; so something
Next
